The name Basil has no real significance, we just liked it. We'd been planning on getting a male puppy as soon as we moved in together and we'd been thinking up names for about six months before we actually adopted the Baz. Aaron wanted to go with "Skeletor" or "Ahab" and he shot down my suggestions as well, but we finally settled on Basil. I love the name, but I hate that everyone mispronounces it like basil the herb intead of how it's really pronounced - "Bazzle."

My old cat was named Nico, after the singer Nico. My cat was a boy and Nico was a woman, but who cares?

When I was a kid, I was not very original. My dog was named Buffy, my cat was named Muffy, my goldfish was named Goldie, and my parakeet was named Tweety. My stroke of genius came at age 8 when my dad bought me a gray hamster and I named him - wait for it - Smokey.

Anyway, how did YOU come up with the names of your pets?
