The name Basil has no real significance, we just liked it. We'd been planning on getting a male puppy as soon as we moved in together and we'd been thinking up names for about six months before we actually adopted the Baz. Aaron wanted to go with "Skeletor" or "Ahab"
and he shot down my suggestions as well, but we finally settled on Basil. I love the name, but I hate that everyone mispronounces it like basil the herb intead of how it's really pronounced - "Bazzle."
My old cat was named Nico, after the singer Nico. My cat was a boy and Nico was a woman, but who cares?
When I was a kid, I was not very original. My dog was named Buffy, my cat was named Muffy, my goldfish was named Goldie, and my parakeet was named Tweety.
My stroke of genius came at age 8 when my dad bought me a gray hamster and I named him - wait for it - Smokey.
Anyway, how did YOU come up with the names of your pets?
Diesel
Prada
Tom Tailor
This is 100% lame BUT.....I saw the name Maddie in the credits of Some Kind of Wonderful and loved it.
1my hubby named Steeler because guess what he is a huge Pittsburgh Steelers fan.
when i was little i had a cocker spaniel and i named her barley because she was that color and a cereal commercial came on and they mentioned barley. i was a bit of a
genius when i was 8 yrs old.
2Awww!
You're an 80's gal through and through.
Is it pathetic that I know exactly which Maddie you're talking about? Maddie Corman, who played Keith's sister.
3Hmmm... Well, when I was five, I named my goldfish Pencil. After that, my fish were Tom and Jerry (obviously from cartoons). My first two cats were WC and TC - White Cat and Tabby Cat. My first dog was a chocolate lab, so I named her Murphy (like Murphy Brown - har). Then we got my mutt dog, Chance, who was named after coming home from the pound because she got a second chance (am I blowing you away with my originality?). In college, I had three fish named Frankie, Sammy, and Dean, and two snails named Chaos and Mayhem. Frankie, Sammy, and Dean are self-explanatory. Mayhem came from a surfboard shaper, and I figured the other snail should get a similar name, so he/she got Chaos. All three fish and both snails were eaten by my cat, Desmo, who was named after a Ducati motorcycle engine system.
4My one dog came with her name, Madison... but I named my other dog Storm... I just like it. We wrote out a ton of names starting with S and that was the one the stuck.
5Whip, your originality is killing me!
6I had a german shepard (she died
) but I named her 'buttercup' because I always said 'pucker up
buttercup'
again...
so I named him CHICO AQUILLA PICO
DIGAYO.
7She had some puppies and we kept the one that looked like her and I named him 'buddy' after Cory's grandpa's dog in remembrance of Cory's grandpa cause he died in '05
I had a kitten that was found in a dumpster behind some place....I don't know why Jessica and her friend were even around there...oh yeah her friend Kristen worked there and was on a 'break' well she heard a little bitty 'raaorrrr' and actually went inside the dumpster and pulled out the little kitty. Jessi brought him to me and I looked at him for a couple of days.....then realized he looked like he was wearing a tuxedo. He was black with a white collar stripe around his neck and a white line all the way down his belly and a cross like white hair line at the 'waist' ANNNNNNNND he would actually kind of bark like a dog everytime I gave him a McCormick's bacon bits piece so I named him TUXEDODAWG....and I had a chiuaua (sp?)and wanted to incorporate some of my jewishness in him and he was 'latin'
Oh, well if you mean like ALLLLL the animals., whew....I had two siamese cats named 'beans and tators' and one hymilayan named Nicki and one named Bleu (cause of his eyes) One super mean siamese cat named Ling...don't know why, mom named her, she attacked our ankles
um......one orange and white domestic cat one time named Clyde...dunno why!! Another siamese named Tiffany (Cory's dad accidentally ran over her with one of
their company dump trucks...when they first started their company) sooooooooooooooo many more kitties , too many to name..
8Oops - was it just supposed to be the current pet(s)? I was just running down the list of horrible names I've given to innocent animals.
9My 1st dog was a black german sheperd/ border collie mix but she had brown feet that kinda looked like cowboy boots. ya know, with the little vee at the top. Anyhoo, I named her Ginger Socks, but we just called her Ginger. As for Bodhi... it is short for bodhisattva, which is sort of the Buddist equivilent of a saint. A bodhisattva is someone who has achived nirvana but chooses to stay in the wheel & help others reach nirvana. I loved my Buddhism class & ever since then wanted a puppy to name Bodhi. I talked about & talked about it & made my mom CRAZY and one day there was a puppy in a box on my porch!! oh & my beloved George Harrison's son is named Bodhi, too.
10Uh, Bear got his name because we didn't like the name he had... I don't even remember what it was, and when we adopted him he was so loveable I was trying to make my husband nauseous and said we should name him "snugglebear" and he was like, no way! of course, but Bear kind of stuck. He's really solid and just kind of lumbers along.
Princess came with her name. I thought it was a stupid stupid stupid name and said we'd change it as soon as we thought of something else, but it really fits her personality so it stuck.
11My mom thought it was a dumb name but then she realized I couldn't use it for a kid later on & decided that is was ok. Cause ya know, I really cared what she thought about MY dog's name
12The two dogs we have now (Lady and Floyd) already had those names when we got them from the rescue centre. Before that I've had cats called Coco, Cookie, Biscuit, Poppy and Curosity. All of which my mum decided on.
13Yes Whip, that's her! Maddie Corman! She has also been on L&O a few times, too.
14When we were searching for a dog on Petfinder.com, some of the dogs had the DUMBEST names.
Fluffy, Spot, Snoopy, Scooby Doo, etc.
The rescue where we got Basil wasn't too bad, they named their dogs after their volunteers. So Basil's original name was Rob, and his brothers and sisters were named Greg, Eric, Danny, Beth, and Maggie.
15Okay, my cat's name is Rico. See, my karaoke song is "Copa Cabana" so I named the cat Lola because we originally thought it was a girl, and then found out it was a boy, so sticking with the Copa Cabana theme, he was renamed Rico. My other cat is Furby, because he's just all fluffy and furry. And before them was Sniffles (R.I.P.) who had the worst little kitty cold when I got her and she kept blowing little kitty snot bubbles. And since "Sniffles" is just a tad bit cuter of a name than "Snot Bubble" she became Sniffles.
As for my dog, she is my little princess! And since Cinderella was always my favorite princess, my dog was quickly named Cinderella. And she truly lives up to her name.
16Well i just went with a name I liked but didn't think I'd ever name my daughter (don't know why) so my dog is Holly. Before that I had another dog I called Sam - no particular reason. And my first dog was called Buttons - I was really young when I got her so have no idea where her name came from.
My cousin has a dog called Deefer - as in "D for Dog"
17I named my cat (the only one who didn't already have a name) Magpie because that was the cat's name in Practical Magic.
Which is surprisingly fitting because the magpie bird has an insatiable hunger. Perfect for him since he chows down any chance he can get
on anything. He even eats Rice Krispies.
I kind of like the the names of the cats that we adopted: Lace and Garth
My husband wouldn't let me change Garth's name because he thought it was so cool and claimed him as HIS cat. And Lace already knew her name at 5 months, so we left it.
18I went to the Library.
19they have a lot of great books that help you with naming pets or babies, they were a great help, I have some pretty creative names for my pets!
hope this helps!
I always wanted a bulldog named Dewey, but Dewey is a dufus name and Auggie's too smart for a dufus name. So we named him after our favorite waiter at Marie Callender's. I'd forgotten about the whole Dewey thing when we were looking for another dog, and we were thinking of naming the new one either Satchel, Hutch, or Skeeter. But the second they put him on the floor and he started tearing around, I knew he was a dufus and he was Dewey a week before we even took him home.
As a kid we had a cat named Claude because the first thing he ever did to my brother was Claude his Balls. And we had Seymore (Butts) because he was a manx and had no tail. Then there was Timmy because he had a bad leg. But the South Park Timmy, not Tiny Tim.
20"Claude his balls."
21Claude his balls???? D for Dog??? OMG!!! You creative people!
"Party like a rock star, pound like a porn star, play like an all star!"
22My old neighbors' cat was Cat Face.
I laugh at that, but I did have White Cat and Tabby
Cat...
23we named our first cat Pigpoo bc roms nickname is pig and he calls me poo so we named her pigpoo, then we got Dooties and i kept callin her my little doot doot so hence dooties which is really fitting bc she like to smell hynies and she poos alot.. then we got dooties sister and wanted to keep in the tradition of excrement and we named her Shioties prononced "sh*te-tees" but then she got really really really sick and the vet said she isnt going to make it bc she had 106 fever and was dehydrated etc. and almost died and i asked my brother to watch out for her and that nite when we left the vet, i looked at her hysterically cryin and i said ur gonna be ok buddy and she winked at me and then we got in the car and there was a pink floyd song on the radio which was my brothers favorite band. and the next day the vet called and said boy do u have a fighter .. she fever dropped and she is purring in her cage. we went to get her the next day and decided to rename her joey after her fairy godfather. sorry for long post
24I'm trying to think of some other cool pet names I know.
This woman across the street from me has a beautiful (but mean) husky with blue eyes and she named it Blue. Not because of the eyes, but after the old man in "Old School." But I don't like them because her dog always attacks Baz in the park and she never does anything about it.
Another couple in the neighborhood have a Greater Swiss Mountain Dog named Crunch. Crunch is my favorite dog at the park. He and Baz are the same age except Crunch is 100 pounds heavier than Baz. They are BFF, and I think Crunch is an awesome name.
Our friends have five cats and three dogs, and name them all human names: Molly, Anna, Charlie, Claude, Zoey, Francis, and I can't remember the other two.
25dooties likes to smell hynies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
26whip!! Are huskies mean?
27Cause when we move, I told Rick I want an Alaskan Husky, blue eyed and a doll face white male persian kitty!!!! Man, I hope it don't eat my kitten!!!!!! I thought they were suppose to be nice dogs?
Hope not! I would really love to have a Husky too!
Toby came about from my good friend's daughter. She was with me when I got Toby and she just started calling him that. To tell you the truth, at first I didn't like it. I always thought Toby was a silly name, but then again my lil corgi IS VERY silly so it turned out to be perfect!
So it stuck.
28No, not all huskies are mean. Most of the huskies at the park are very sweet. But this one is an a-hole.
29We were given our dog by my dad's boss. They (boss' family) had gotten him at Christmas and named him St. Nicholas. That name was unacceptable, so we shortened it to Nicky.
30Bug is named that because of his Bug eyes. But, we decided Bug was kind of boring, so we named him The Notorious B.U.G. aka Buggy Smalls.
Dorky, but it still cracks us up.
I've had a lot of dogs over my life (Mom likes puppies, not so much dogs.
) who've been named
in backwards order...MacDuff the Mini Schnauzer (Duffy for short), Li'i (means small in Hawaiian) the teeny little mutt, Freckles the Brittany Spaniel, Scruffy the white mutt, Chamois (is
that how you spell it? We named him after the car drying cloth) the Cocker Spaniel.
I had Bob, Bunny and Ziggy the fish. I had a biting hamster named Sid Vicious. We had two mice - my brother's one was named Mr. Whiskers and I can't for the life of me remember what mine was named. But, I do remember having a terminal case of embarrassment over how lame my mouse's name was compared to his...
Oh! And I almost forgot a dog.
We had Mali the Rottweiler/Chesapeake Bay
Retriever, but she came from the Humane Society with that name.
Great question, Whip!
31Brees got her name because all of my guys love the New Orleans Saints. She's named after Drew Brees, the quarterback.
Socks got his name becasue all four of his feet have white paws. He looks like he's wearing socks.
Mara was named Samara when we got her. It made me think of that little girl from The Ring movies. We shortened it to Mara, and the boys call her Mara Jade now. (Can you tell hubby has influenced them a lot? lol)
Tex and Rex...who knows? lol The boys just picked those names up out of the blue. Rex was named first, and I think it was because Brandon had just gotten a new T-Rex from TRU, and then Jake rhymed Tex with Rex.
32Hmmm, first dog was a Golden Retriever named Flower, from the skunk in Bambi. Then a black lab named Megans Midnight Shadow (Shad for short) Daisy the mutt (my sister liked daisys, or felt the need to continue the earlier theme), two yellow labs named Sunshine and Moonshine because one was very yellow and the other was much lighter.
Pandora the cat is named after the Greek myth, Pandora opened the box and let out all the evil into the world...curiosity killed the cat. And she had her own box
33
Mara Jade. I hope I'm not the only
who gets that.
34I always thought Harley was a cool female name, so thats what I named my Min-Pin, and my Bull Terrier was a rescue so he came with the name Trigger. We considered renaming him, but it does really fit his personality. You pick up a stick and it's like pulling a trigger - he's ready to play catch. And he never gets tired, lol!
35any time I hear the word chamois I think of Super Troopers!
36I don't know what Mara Jade is... :embarassed:
Don't worry sasha, Mara Jade is a character from the Star Wars books. Not even the movies, the books. Nerrrrrrd.
37I have a dog named Laverne and a cat named Clementine. When I get a cat, I want to name it Sebastian or Fat Louis (like in the Princess Diaries!)
38My first and only dog so far was named TJ. It came from my mom's childhood dog. It was named Teddy. My little brother said call it Teddy Jr.
I'm wanting a puppy in the near future. I've been toying with names like Nutmeg, Col. Mustard, Professor Plum, and George.
39i named my first yorkie "tino" afteer rudolph valentino the world's greatet lover because when i picked him up at the airport, i opened his crate and he leaped out and just started kissing me like crazy. now he's 3yrs and is still the biggest sweetheart in the world!
