Last month I switched from our usual Frontline Plus to K9 Advantix for my dogs' monthly flea and tick medication, and 5 out of 7 of them had a bad skin reaction to it. I am definitely switching back to Frontline.
For their heartworm medication I use Heartgard.
I am curious as to what brand of flea/tick and heartworm meds you all give your pets.

I don't give Auggie anything. If something doesn't make him throw up, it WILL give him a rash. And vice versa.
I tried giving Dewey Zodiac once, but he managed to lick some off and was soooo sick from it for two days. Now I give him Sentinel. It's a once a month pill that protects against fleas, heartworms, and two or three other kinds of worms and creepies. It's good stuff, and it costs the same as Frontline or Advantix.
Here's the blurb for it, copy/pasted from 1800petmeds.com:
Sentinel Flavor Tabs are for use in dogs and puppies that weigh at least 2 lbs and are four weeks of age or older. Sentinel Flavor Tabs are used to prevent heartworm disease and to control adult hookworm infections. Sentinel Flavor Tabs are also used to remove and control adult roundworm and whipworm infections. Sentinel Flavor Tablets also contain the insect growth regulator, Lufenuron, which is used to control fleas by preventing the development of flea eggs. The medication does not kill adult fleas.
1Auggie has never had a flea problem anyway, so he doesn't need to be treated for them. Dewey gets them like crazy if we don't give him something. He'll still have two or three fleas on him a day versus the 40+ he used to get (I flea comb them both), so that's a huge improvement. Sentinel = well worth the money.
2Frontline for flea/tick and Interceptor for heartworm. It was what our vet recommended and we've never had any problems.
3sticky- that is crazy one gets fleas and one doesn't.
whip- my vet said Interceptor is good.
4welcome back!
I think they just don't like Auggie's funk. We bathe them both once a week, and Auggie STILL manages to smell like a teenage boy by Sunday.

6Advantix and Heartguard. I still use Frontline on the cats.
7I have used Frontline for Toby when he was a puppy, but haven't had to use it lately. And I also use Interceptor for heartworm. I used to give him Heartgard, but I changed Vets. Haven't had problems with any one of them...
8We use Frontline Plus and Heartgard. We used to use Iverhart or something...just a generic Heartgard. But, I've been too lazy to go into the vet on post, and have just been ordering online.
9jen- what do you order off of online?
10Don't you have to have a prescription to order it online? We use Heartgard and Advantix.

12Luckily my cats are indoor so we've never had a problem with then contracting anything. As for the dog, when we take him camping or to the beach we put a bandanna on him that has been treated with citronella non-medicated bug deterrent and so far it has worked to keep the mosquitoes and fleas/ticks away from him. I worry about the topical pesticide treatments (like zodiak, etc) because the ingredients are so highly toxic! I had a friend who's vet weighed his cat and put some on the back of the cats neck (I think it was Advantage? I'm in Canada so I'm not sure if it's the same as the Advantix some of you are mentioning?) anyway...the next day his cat became paralyzed and they rushed him to the vet. He had had a bad reaction to the pesticide and had to be put to sleep. Remember that all pesticide is a nerve agent (that's how it kills the bugs) so please be careful when using it on pets. That's the same reason most vets do NOT recommend flea collars, as the pesticides can slowly poison your pet.
