I know I'm not the first to post about this but the list of recalled foods keeps getting bigger and bigger. For more info, click here.
I also have a question (Tor, are you listening?) about this. If the same company is making all these foods, does that mean that Iams and Eukanuba are really no better than the generic brand pet foods?

thank GOD the only thing i have been givin my babies was 9 lives, friskies and fancy feast and after all this tehy are done with can food. im making there food homemade. chicken, tuna, hamburger etc
1My vet recommends Hills Science Diet, it is NOT owned by the evil company that distributed the tained food (thank god!!!) So, if any of you are looking to switch brands, my kitties love it and apparently it's some of the best food on the market.
2I was wondering the same thing, Whip. I scanned the prodcuts listed before I read what you wrote above and was SHOCKED to see Eukanuba and Iams on there
3me too! So much for spending tons of money on name brands!! Bodhi only eats Beneful puppy food. oh & whatever she begs from us...
4Yup, that is what Maddie eats....except the Beneful for Weight Control
That and Alpo canned.
5The company MenuFoods) is bad news! My bf and I watched a documentary on CityTV here in Canada where they had undercover video of the animal testing labs they run. I was crying so hard I could hardly see the TV! There is lots of info about it online, just type it into a search engine. They give grants to labs that absolutely butcher animals alive, it was horrific
.
6Since then we've been spreading the word to everyone we know not to buy Eukaneuba or Iams or any other subsidiary company's product, as a pet lover it's just terrible to find out what we are unknowingly supporting behind the scenes. Mot of the pets who end up in these places are former family pets who ended up in shelters for whatever reason and to end up dying in a lab is the ultimate disgrace to them.
Thank God we feed the Baz Science Diet. Phew! This is one of the scariest things I've heard in a LOOOOONG time!
7do you guys think it's safe to feed my cats the Nutro Natural Choice DRY FOOD even though the wet food is on the list?
8um, I don't know. you could call that 1-800 number to ask. but you might get a busy signal or be put on hold for a long ass time..
9cr*pola!! i just bought like $60 worth of that food b/c i thought i was better for them!!! i think i'll just put it away until more info comes out!
my poor kitties, thank god i havn't fed any of it to them yet
10I don't know Liza, that's a tough one. Hopefully they have it right that it was only the wet food that was tainted with the poison. Does it have wheat gluten listed as one of the fillers? Was it manufactured during the same time period as the tainted food? I guess those are things to consider. If you havn't opened the bag yet try returning it to the store and grabbing some Science Diet. We started using Science Diet because one cat Mila has a skin condition irritated by wheat filler. She loves the lite, hairball preventing formula!
11This is just canned foods right? Crap. Brees eats Nutro Ultra and it's on the list now. :/
12theres a thing on this on NPR right now!
13ok...its over...i'm a dork...
14
I'M SHCOKED TO SEE IAMS AND EUKANUBA ON THERE
thank gosh my cats eat the vet brand umm td but WOW that's a long list this is
very SCARY
15I think I'm going to try to switch Brees over to Proplan or something until this is settled. I'd feel better about it!
16Iams and Eukanuba are better than, say, Ol' Roy or Purina, but they're still not great. A good rule of thumb is to read the first few ingredients- anything that lists corn (a filler) or by-products (don't get me started) right away is made up of mostly filler and/or disgusting animal parts and is not a good food. Eukanuba lists chicken by-products second and corn third, so I'd pass and find something better. While animal guts are fine for dogs, by-products aren't regulated and diseased or rotted things can go into it.
17I wondered the same thing. I've been feeding my cats Nutro and Iams for years and now I'm wondering if I should have been feeding them Walmart brand. I only feed my cats dry food (it's better for their teeth) but I'm not feeling really good about that either. I'm going to check drfosterandsmith.com.
18Okay, according to the Nutro site the dry food is safe since it's processed at a different place. I'm guessing the same may be true for all of them, hopefully? Check the websites and it may tell you.
19thanks for the advice wynter
20wynter, thanks for checking...
21Thank you wynter!
22grl in the world- I have seen the pics and documentary on Iams. I promised myself to never buy their products.
Everyone, if you have not seen this, please look it into it.
the main culprits for cruel and unethical animal testing are the major international 'pet' food businesses.
* IAMS / Eukanuba owned by Procter & Gamble
* Hills Science Diet owned by Colgate Palmolive
(taken from this site: uncaged.co.uk/iams.htm)
here is the some of the video- very sad footage:

Thanks for the info jgasia!
24I knew about Procter and Gamble (thats why I don't buy cover girl cosmetics, pringles chips, etc), but I didn't know about Colgate Polmolive! Damn! Do you have a pet food you could recommend where the company isn't evil? It's getting frustrating trying to find a company that isn't psycho!! The make your own pet food book Shiloh Jolie Pitt posted is looking better and better!!!
I can't click on that jgasia -- it will make me ill to see some poor animal being abused.
I have fed my animals Wellness -- which is excellent, but I have also bought then Iams. Never again on the Iams. Tonight I threw the Iams away and went to the pet store and bought Castor & Pollux Natural Ultramix for my cats. It says it has no corn, wheat and no by products. I bought Natures Recipe for my dogs. It says it has no beef, corn, wheat, fillers or by products. I found both of these brands at Petco.
The Wellness can be found here:

25Unfortunately, almost all major pet food brands do some kind of testing on animals. I can say without saying too much that Iams/Eukanuba is involved in quite a bit of testing that has nothing to do with cat or dog food. They fund a lot of university research groups that aren't always ethical. I know someone who has a household of "leftovers", i.e. dogs that survived a various research studies, that now have a plethora of health issues.
To answer Whip's original question: Even though this company is involved in the manufacturing of all of these foods, Iams and Eukanuba are still a higher quality food. Not as many fillers, different minerals, amino acids and supplements like chondroitan and glucosamine for joint health. I personally prefer Hill's Prescription Science Diet for my furry family members.
26Did anyones just see the news?

im seriously considering making luke's food. this was scary. i heard it was rat poison found in those foods!
31
sorry i suc'd you already mentioned rat poison.
32I just wanted to say to those who wonder if the expensive food is the same as the cheap food a GIANT--NO!
You really get what you pay for when you buy dog food, and if you are buying cheap grocery store dog food you are probably harming your animal more than helping it in the long run.
For instance, ff your food is colored, they don't really care about your animal, they are coloring the food so it looks appealing to YOU, dogs can't see colors so there is NO REASON to color food.
Like another poster wrote about checking ingredients PLEASE do so! Please find a company that complies with AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) standards for feeding. They really care about animals and make sure they approve only food that is safe for pets to consume.
If you want to learn more about what's in commecial dog food, 2 books I highly recommend, are Raw Meaty Bones by Tom Lonsdale, and Food Pets Die for by Ann N. Martin.
If anyone is looking for "safe" brands, we use Innova Evo (the grain free kind as I have a rice sensitive dog) dry food, and Merrick wet food, and treats that is holistic dog food and AAFCO approved.
But if anyone can gain anything from all this horror and sadness is to educate yourself and READ labels! "By-products" are NOT GOOD things! This also goes for the treats you feed your dogs too! Take care
